The National Native Children’s Trauma Center would like to uplift The Tribal NEAR (Neuroscience, Epigenetics, Adverse Childhood Experiences & Resilience) Science and Community Wisdom Project’s Remembering Resilience Podcast Series. This series highlight resilience through and beyond trauma from an Indigenous perspective. There are three seasons encompassing topics such as historical trauma, epigenetic inheritance, sacred spaces, and boundaries with accompanying conversation guides for each episode. Conversation guides have been used in group settings to help facilitate conversations about the material and allow for deeper reflection on the content of each episode. The episodes are approximately 20-30 minutes in length and can be found on multiple platforms or accessible via their website: Tribal N.E.A.R. Science & Community Wisdom Project – Home of Remembering Resilience.
The Tribal NEAR Science and Community Project began in partnership with the White Earth Band of Ojibwe and the Fond du Lac Band of Ojibwe which has now expanded to include the Lower Sioux Indian Community, Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, and Bois Forte Band of Chippewa. The communities received introductory training and brought community members together to have conversations on these topics toward the development of a prevention plan in these areas. The podcasts that were developed were a result of a need to be able to increase community member awareness on an ongoing basis that now benefits us all.
After listening to the podcast series, some listeners were able to say they learned things like,
“New insight about recognizing and correcting my own dysregulation”
“My understanding about the roots of historical trauma and its impact on our communities. I feel like this insight is crucial for me to have compassion towards others professionally and personally.”
“How important my community is for my/our healing. I will work harder to connect with others to promote my and my community’s healing.”
This series has created healing change from and by Indigenous community’s coming together. We are wanting to make sure people know about not only the podcast series, but also the partnerships that have been developed and the other resources that can be found on their website.
The project was funded by the Center for Racial and Health Equity and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota, and is currently facilitated by FamilyWise Services, with support from Peacemaker Resources and local partners.
